We are approaching the end of the year – can you believe 2021 is almost over? To me, it feels like this year has flown by in the blink of an eye. For some people though, I know this year has dragged on as we have waded through the second year of the pandemic and the “new normal.”

Whether the year has passed quickly or slowly, now is a wonderful time for us to look back over the last 12 months to reflect on how this year has gone and take a yearly inventory, so that we can set intentions as we head in to the new year.

WHY INVENTORY

By taking the time to reflect on the past year, we are better prepared to go into a new year armed with information about ourselves so that we can continue to live a life of intention and purpose. And why do we want to do that? I’ll tell you:

Intentional living simply means to live the life that you truly want. A life by design of your choosing, rather than living a life that just ‘happens’ to you.

And doesn’t that sound like a better way to live?

So, grab a pen and paper – it’s time to inventory our year.

NEW YEAR’S INTENTIONS OR RESOLUTIONS

First of all, did you set intentions or resolutions going in to 2021?

  • If yes, how did those go?
  • Did you follow through with your intentions?
  • If you didn’t, what stopped you?

If you didn’t make resolutions or set intentions at the beginning of the year (and even if you did), what popped up during the year that you wanted to achieve/what new goals did you set?

  • How did you accomplish them?
  • What roadblocks did you face?
  • What could you have done differently?

OTHER YEARLY INVENTORY QUESTIONS

What “big” or notable things happened this year?

What are you most proud of this year?

What is something that didn’t turn out the way you expected?

Who were your biggest supporters this year?

How do you wish you would have spent your energy differently?

What are the three biggest lessons you learned this year?

What brought you peace this year?

What brought you joy?

What made you sad?

What angered you?

What motivated you?

In what way did you surprise yourself this year?

What relationship(s) did you let go this year and why?

What relationship(s) got stronger this year and why?

What investments did you make into your health this year?

Were you satisfied with job? Why or why not?

Did you feel balanced this year? Why or why not? If you did, what did you do to keep yourself balanced? If you didn’t, what could you do differently so that you feel balanced in the future?

What is something from the past you made peace with this year?

What is something that you struggled to let go of this year?

How could you have better invested your money this year? Your time? Your talents? Your emotional energy?

These are questions can help get you going with your yearly inventory, but they are by no means everything you might reflect over. Take the time to write down anything else that comes to mind about your year as you go.

These are great reflection questions! I’m going to use for some journal prompts and daily inventory.
