One of the most important things about personal growth and development is creating the vision of where you want to go. Yes, the action you take to achieve your vision is of paramount importance. But without a goal or a destination in mind, that action may be misguided, misspent, or even useless.
Think about it:
A business with no business plan is more likely to fail that one who has a clear vision of where they are headed. They may waste money or other resources, or they may not understand their true mission or values.
A runner who sets off on a training run without a final destination picked out in advance is more likely to wander aimlessly and may end up running farther than they had intended, over-extending himself and wasting energy.
A chef with no plan for a meal they want to make may not have all the right ingredients on hand to create a dish that is *chef kiss*.
Think about what you want out of life. Really think about it.
Do you want to improve your relationships? Grow in your communication skills? Find a partner, settle down and get married? Cultivate more meaningful friendships?
Do you want to become debt free? Manage your finances better? Invest money for retirement? Pay off your home? Save money for college?
Do you want to get a promotion at work? Or do you want to switch careers altogether? Take classes or get certified to advance your career? Ask for a raise? Do you want to start your own business?
Do you want to get in shape? Learn to eat better? End the cycle of emotional eating? Create a new workout routine or habit? Try a new sport?
Do you want to learn a new language?
Do you want to learn how to cook?
Do you want to start a meditation practice?
Do you want to travel?
What do you want to do? What is your vision for yourself?
Step one in personal growth is getting clear on your goal. Only then can you implement real change.
My encouragement for you is to take some time today, just 10 minutes, and do some writing on where you want to go, your vision for yourself. This can be an immediate goal, a short-term goal, or a long-term goal. You get to decide. But it is only after you get really clear on your destination that you can take your first step toward achieving it.
