A Reminder to Live One Day at a Time

Last week I shared a snippet from an interview I had done with my friend Claire Bays, in which I asked her to leave us with one final thought at the end of the interview. She then turned the tables on me, asking me to leave our audience with a little nugget too. Here’s that video clip, as well as the dialogue in text.

ONE DAY AT A TIME

Claire: Okay wait, so I want you to leave people with one thing – one thought.

AGM: Oooh, me? One thought? Well, I did just mention it earlier and I made a reel on it that I’m going to post later, but “One day at a time.” You know?

To echo or to extend off of what you said about how people are capable – I mean, I think anything in this world is possible when you break it down into a small manageable chunk. For me, that means twenty-four hours at a time. Sometimes it means one hour at a time. You know? It means making it through doing the dishes and then I can make the next decision. But I think anything is possible when you break it down.

So often we go, “I want to change my life.” And “I’m going to loose 50 pounds now.” Or “I’m going to get debt free now.” Or “I’m going to go to the gym every single day.” And it’s like, just go to the gym today. You know what I mean?

Claire: Absolutely.

AGM: It’s like, just for today, what do you want to accomplish? Okay let’s just do that today. Make big goals, but then break them down into small tangible actions that you can complete on a daily basis. Don’t even worry about tomorrow. What is it right now, right here today that you can accomplish?

I will also say that – just a friendly reminder and something that I’ve had to learn – is that my 100% today may not necessarily look like my 100% tomorrow, you know? There are days when I have to cancel. I have to cancel on myself or I have to cancel an appointment or – you know what I mean? Because mentally, spiritually, physically, emotionally I may not be at my “top,” if you will. And that that is okay. A little bit of grace with ourselves and with other people goes a really long way.

So, that’s what I’d have to say.

Claire: That’s beautiful, I love it. It’s extremely powerful.
