You Can Choose, No Matter What

Harsh truth. You are the reason for your own unhappiness.

Yep, I said it.

You are the reason you are unhappy.

Sure, people suck sometimes. Or life’s circumstances may not be ideal. I won’t deny that. Some days it can feel like we got dealt a really shitty hand. Other days we could stub our toe and the world could come crumbling down.

Maybe your job isn’t fulfilling. You didn’t get a promotion that you thought you’d get. Your pay isn’t what you feel like you deserve. You feel like your boss takes advantage of you.

Maybe your friends are letting you down. No one calls to check in on you. They cancel plans. They talk behind your back. You weren’t invited to the latest hang out.

Maybe your partner doesn’t put away the laundry or do the dishes right. Or it’s something bigger – maybe he had an affair.

Maybe a loved one died. Or you got hurt in some way. You got sick. You are depressed.

Maybe people cut you off in traffic. The cashier was rude to you at the grocery store. Your mom guilts you every time you talk to her. Your favorite necklace broke. Dinner burned in the oven. Someone on the internet said something mean. A relationship ended. The kids just won’t behave.

Maybe life just hasn’t gone the way you expected.

The list goes on.

But no matter what life throws your way, no matter what people do: you are the reason you are unhappy.

You are choosing to be unhappy. Yes, you are making a choice. You are choosing to let other people’s behavior dictate how you feel. You are giving other people and situations the power to control your attitude.

Stop letting other people choose your attitude for you. Yes things happen, but you choose how you respond.

You can choose to be happy, no matter what.

You can choose to be content, no matter what.

You can choose to be peaceful, no matter what.

You can choose to rise above, no matter what.

You can choose to smile, no matter what.

You can choose to be kind, no matter what.

You can choose to be patient, no matter what.

You can choose to be loving, no matter what.

You can choose to be gracious, no matter what.

You can choose to let go of anything that doesn’t serve you, no matter what.

You can choose, no matter what.

Until next time,
